Studio Models, Artistic Innovation, and the Moscow Avant-Garde
Olin Humanities, Room 102
5:30 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
In early twentieth-century Moscow, paintings of female models by avant-garde artists became notorious. Shocking viewers with their boldness, some were even banned from exhibition. Where did pictures like this come from? Why did they cause such an uproar? Margaret Samu’s talk will explore the origin of these scandals by examining representations of studio models working in Saint Petersburg and Moscow from the nineteenth century through 1910s. Her talk will highlight the impact of informal drawing circles and private life classes, which emphasized female figure studies, on artistic innovation.5:30 pm – 7:00 pm EDT/GMT-4
