Community Action Awards 2015

Herrick, Lydia
Lydia Herrick is an intern at Worker Justice Center of NY.

"Although I am only two-thirds of the way through my internship at the Worker Justice Center, I have learned a considerable amount about the difficulty of being an ally. For obvious reasons, it is an immense challenge to be an ally to a specific group of people: the ally has more privilege than the group they are supporting, which creates uncomfortable—and sometimes hurtful—situations. Navigating these differences while still maintaining a close, supportive relationship brings a wealth of issues. It has been especially challenging for me to be a seemingly trustworthy ally at the outset; I am not Latina, and I am still perfecting my Spanish."
